The Value of Small Resorts (and Why We Care So Much)

Ramblings from a small resort owner...

There’s something about small resorts in Minnesota that’s hard to fully explain—until you’ve experienced it.

It’s not just the cabins or the lake itself. It’s the feeling of arriving and settling in. The slower pace. The familiar faces. The way a week at the lake starts to feel like something you return to, year after year.

At places like ours, it’s often the same families coming back each season. Kids grow up together. Traditions form without anyone really planning them. You might meet someone one summer and find yourself catching up again the next.

There’s a simplicity to it that doesn’t try too hard.

Small resorts also tend to be deeply personal. The people who run them are often the same ones you see around the property—checking in on things, chatting at the dock, making sure everything is running smoothly in ways that don’t always get noticed, but are felt.

For us, that’s always been part of the goal. This is also part of why we stay connected to the broader resort community—working alongside others who care about preserving these kinds of places for years to come.

Not to create something flashy, but something steady. A place where you can unplug, spend time outside, and settle into a rhythm that feels different from everyday life.

Places like this are becoming less common, and that makes them all the more meaningful to the people who return to them.

It’s also part of why we stay connected beyond our own property—working alongside others through the Park Rapids Chamber and the Community of Minnesota Resorts to help support and preserve places like this for years to come.

We’re proud to be part of that tradition here in the Heartland Lakes area—and grateful for the guests who continue to make it what it is.
