When Should You Book Your Minnesota Resort Vacation?

Planning a quintessential Minnesota resort vacation sounds simple — until you realize your favorite cabin, favorite lake week, or favorite family tradition might already be spoken for.

At Two Inlets Resort, one of the most common questions we hear is:

“How far in advance can we book for next year?”

The short answer: you can book one year plus one week in advance.

Because many of our guests return year after year, there are a few helpful things to know if you’re hoping for a specific cabin, a specific week, or a stay during the heart of summer.

Why Booking Early Matters

Summer lake vacations in Minnesota tend to be tradition-based. Families often return to the same resort, the same cabin, and even the same week each year.

At Two Inlets Resort, our current guests have the first opportunity to rebook their same cabin and dates for the following year. Because most checkouts happen on Fridays and Saturdays, we typically know by the end of that checkout week whether they plan to return.

Once that rebooking window has passed, any cabins they choose not to reserve open to the public shortly after.

That means if you’re hoping to book a Minnesota resort vacation for 2027 — or whatever the next summer season may be — the best thing to do is plan ahead and follow up right after that week has ended.

Our Booking Window: One Year Plus One Week

Here’s how it works:

You can book one year plus one week in advance.

For example, if you’re hoping to stay during a particular week next summer, we recommend reaching out close to one year plus one week ahead of time. Once the current guest rebooking week has passed, we’ll have a clearer picture of what is available.

We do our best to keep track of everyone who asks, but a friendly email after that week has ended is always helpful. It lets us know you’re still interested and helps us match you with the best available cabin options.

Can You Join a Waitlist?

Yes. If you’re hoping for a specific cabin, date, or family week, we can add you to our waitlist.

This is especially helpful if you’re looking for a peak summer week, need multiple cabins, want to stay near family or friends, or are planning around school calendars, reunions, weddings, or other special trips.

We try to follow up with waitlist guests as soon as openings become available. That said, sending us a quick email after the rebooking week has passed is always welcome and helpful.

Another Good Time to Check Back: Late January

Even when guests reserve their cabin a year in advance, plans can shift. Families often gather over the holidays, compare calendars, and realize that work schedules, school activities, weddings, reunions, or other plans may affect their vacation week.

We strongly encourage guests to let us know as soon as possible if something changes with their reservation. The sooner we know, the easier it is for us to help another family who may be waiting for that cabin or week.

Because of that, late January or early February can be a good time to check in again if you’re hoping for a specific opening. By then, we often have a clearer picture of whether any plans have changed after the holiday season.

Our online booking calendar is also updated in real time, so it’s a great place to watch for new openings without always needing to send an email.

Week-Long Stays vs. Short Stays

During the heart of summer, our prime season stays are typically booked by the week.

Most cabins are reserved Saturday to Saturday, while Reunion Cabin 11 books Friday to Friday. This helps us keep summer weeks organized during our busiest season, especially when many families are returning for their traditional lake vacation.

If you’re hoping for a shorter stay, we welcome those too — they just tend to work best during our more flexible seasons.

Short stays are often available in May, sometimes in early June, and again in late August, early September, and through fall. For 2026, our fall season runs through October 18. These stays can usually be booked more spontaneously, and our online availability calendar is the best place to check for open dates.

If you’re hoping for a shorter stay during prime summer, it’s still worth keeping an eye on availability. We typically do not begin booking or seriously considering short summer stays until after mid-April, once we have a better picture of the season.

Sometimes a last-minute cancellation creates an opening that we’re able to split into a shorter stay. When that happens, we’re happy to offer it. We actually enjoy when these opportunities come up, because it gives a family who may not be able to stay for a full week the chance to enjoy a few days at the lake.

When Is the Best Time to Book?

For peak summer weeks, especially mid-June through mid-August, we recommend thinking about your trip about a year in advance.

If you’re more flexible, spring, late summer, and fall can offer more options. These seasons are a wonderful time for quieter lake days, fishing trips, campfires, and a slower pace around Two Inlets Lake.

If you’re planning a visit to the Park Rapids area or looking for a resort near Itasca State Park, booking early can help you line up the cabin, dates, and activities that work best for your family.

And if you’re the spontaneous type, there are sometimes last-minute openings — especially if you’re flexible with dates, cabin type, or length of stay.

Tips for Getting the Cabin or Week You Want

If you’re hoping to book a stay at Two Inlets Resort, here are a few helpful tips:

Reach out early.
A year ahead is not too soon, especially for peak summer weeks.

Know your ideal dates, but stay flexible if you can.
Having a first-choice week and a backup week can make it easier to find a good fit.

Let us know your group size.
The number of adults, kids, and households helps us recommend the right cabin.

Tell us if you’re hoping to be near another family.
We’ll do our best to keep groups close when availability allows.

Follow up after the rebooking week has passed.
This is one of the most helpful things you can do if you’re waiting on a specific opening.

Check back in late January or early February.
Sometimes plans shift after families gather over the holidays and look ahead at the next year’s schedule.

Be flexible with short stays.
